At DrainsAid, we know that sometimes you simply require some helpful advice which you can use in the initial stages of a drainage problem.
Below you can find a few FAQ’s that we are often asked which might help you out. As always, if the problem is more serious, it is important to seek professional drainage help.
Regular cleaning of drains will help to keep them clean and free of debris. Whatever type of drain (bath, shower or kitchen sink) requires a check every once in a while.
You should also watch what you put down the drains as fats and grease should not be flushed down drainpipes as this can lead to blockages.
To dispose of grease and cooking fats, let them cool and solidify before putting them in the regular waste bin.
Although we’re based in Yorkshire, Drains Aid undertake commercial and domestic drainage services throughout the UK, for a wide range of clients.
- If you do have a problem, make sure you know where your mains water stop cock is both inside and outside your house and ensure you have a stopcock key in case you need to turn the water off in an emergency.
DrainsAid would recommend a camera survey (CCTV) of your private drainage system. From this, a detailed report will be supplied, as well as a list of recommendations to prevent the recurrence of the drainage problem. From then, we can carry out any works you decide to undertake and provide ongoing advice.

- Do a regular check on your gutters and grids to keep them free from fallen leaves and other debris.
There are many items which should not be flushed down the toilet. These include:
- Wet Wipes
- Cotton Buds
- Paper Towels
- Fats, oils and grease
Disposing of these items incorrectly leads to blockages and the development of Fatbergs in our sewer systems.
Fatbergs are large masses of solid waste, consisting of things such as congealed fat, oils and sanitary products that have been poured down the drains.
They can cause blockages to the inner lining of drain and sewer pipes, which can lead to waste water flooding into gardens and properties, causing a health hazard .In extreme cases, blocked sewers can spill into rivers, streams, and coastal waters, causing environmental damage.
Only human waste and toilet paper should be flushed down our toilets.
You can call us Monday to Friday, between the hours of 7am and 5pm.
- Fit drain covers to prevent garden debris being washed into the system. You can also use drain guards on your plug holes to reduce the amount of waste getting washed down your sink.
