Commercial drainage specialists DrainsAid have recently relined a 1050mm x 143m cast iron outfall near Hull after it fell into a state of severe corrosion.
Hornsea outfall, which is located on the Blue Flag-rated beach, has been suffering from corrosion resulting in surface water originating from the nearby Hornsea Mere ex-filtrating through holes and damaged joints along its length.
In order to preserve the beaches’ Blue Flag status, DrainsAid were appointed as the specialist drainage contractor to design and implement a solution to repair the pipe in order to prevent the leakage of water onto the beach.
DrainsAid inspected the sewer using a main line crawler CCTV unit and established that there was significant debris in the pipe. This included sand, pebbles and general marine encrustation. Therefore before the pipe could be lined, DrainsAid had to thoroughly cleanse the pipe in readiness, ensuring it was free of any debris, not an easy task when working in a tidal environment.
To complete the works without having to close the road and cause traffic chaos in the busy town centre, a scaffold gantry was constructed over the seafront road in order for temporary pipework to be installed to control flows with pipes running adjacent to the existing outfall then discharging into the sea.
One key challenge with this installation project was the restriction of works due to the tide times. As a result, our expert team had only a very specific window of opportunity for the cleaning and installation of the liner.
The chosen method of lining was Hot Cure using a glass-reinforced liner, therefore scaffold had to be erected and a contract lift crane used in order to gain the required height and angle of entry for inverting the 140m liner. Once inverted, water was used to push the liner into place and a large boiler was used to heat the water for the hot-curing process.
