Recently it has been reported that leaking pipes could be posing a health risk because they allow contaminated water into the system.
A study carried out by Sheffield University’s Professor Joby Boxall found that when a pipe leaks, it spits out clean water, but also sucks in dirty water. The Professor and his team recreated a mains water pipe system and then damaged it, so the leaking pipes could be monitored.
The study highlights the importance of a well maintained drainage system. Contaminated water can cause illnesses as it contains pathogens and viruses.
